New Zealand has some of the highest densities of German and common wasps in the world. They have major social and environmental impacts.
New Zealand has several kinds of native wasps which have evolved here and have never become a nuisance. In recent years there have been four social species accidentally introduced which are classed as pests.
Social wasps live as colonies in nests of honeycomb-like cells. They form complex social groups and all members of a colony help raise the young.
These wasps are very similar in appearance, and both have the characteristic black and yellow colouration.
German wasp.
German wasp
Common wasp. Image: D Sikes (cc).
Common wasp
The German wasp was introduced in the 1940s and the common wasp arrived relatively recently but is now widespread.
Both species live in large colonies, about the size of a soccer ball. These colonies can become huge if they manage to survive over winter.
German wasp nests are grey. Common wasp nests are brown. The world's largest recorded wasp nest was discovered at Waimauku (near Auckland). It was 3.75 metres tall and 1.7 metres wide.
Impact of social wasps
New Zealand has some of the highest densities of German and common wasps in the world. This is because they have no natural predators here, our winters are mild and there is plenty of food for them.
Social impacts
Wasps are a nuisance to forestry gangs, and a worry to tourist operators. They are unwelcome guests at summer picnics and barbecues. No-one finds a wasp sting a fun experience.
The venom from a wasp sting contains several toxins that can cause a hypersensitive or allergic reaction in some people
Environmental impacts
Wasps are a major problem in some beech forests where they consume massive amounts of honeydew. Honeydew is produced by a native scale insect and is an important food for native birds, bats, insects and lizards.
Wasps also eat huge numbers of native insects and have even been seen killing newly hatched birds. By eating so much, they upset the natural food chain of the forest.
In some beech forests there are an estimated 12 nests, or 10,000 worker wasps, per hectare. This makes the numbers of wasps in these areas higher than that of all native birds, stoats and rodents, put together. This study assessed the economic impact of German wasps and common wasps across industries, society and the natural environment in New Zealand.
Paper wasps
Paper wasp. Image: John Wattie (cc).
Asian paper wasp
Although not as much of a problem as German and common wasps, paper wasps have also been introduced to New Zealand.
The Asian paper wasp has been found in the North Island and top of the South Island. The Australian paper wasp remains confined to the north of the North Island.
Both paper wasps build small nests out of regurgitated woody material, about the size of a pear.
You can help
The best way to reduce a local wasp population is to find and destroy all the nests in the area. Usually wasps fly no further than 200 metres, so you should aim to kill all the nests within this range.
Finding the nest
If you search on sunny days, near dawn or dusk, the low light angles will highlight the flight path as wasps enter and leave the nest.
Destroying the nest
Place a dessert spoonful of insecticide at the nest entrance after dark when the wasps have stopped flying. You can use a puffer bottle for this job.
Worker wasps flying in and out will spread the powder into the nest and the colony usually dies within a day. If activity continues repeat the treatment until wasp activity ceases.
Don't shine your torch into the nest or wasps will fly up the beam.
What poisons to use
Insecticides
There are a range of insecticides available from hardware and garden stores. These include Wasp Killer Dust and Permex Insect Dust, which have permethrin as the active ingredient, and Rentokil Wasp Killer and No Wasps Insecticidal Dust, which both use carbaryl.
Follow the safety instructions supplied with the insecticide.
Wasp bait
A targeted wasp bait is available from Nelson-based company Merchento. The bait, Vespex, was developed in conjunction with DOC, although we do not supply it. To purchase the bait contact Merchento. You will have to pass their online test before purchasing.

Room 15 has just been informed that there may not be any more camps at Twizel area school will not be having any more camps.
100% of Room 15 like Huxley Camp and we think it would be very stupid to get rid of Camps 1.Us kids love having freedom but we are still learning. And tramp helps physical abilities and our fitness and ability to stay out in the wild
2.Camps help us kids with our outdoor skills, teamwork and bonding. On Camp you have your fair share of everything for example Cooking, Dishes and tidying up.
3.At Huxley we have activity we do phycical and mental activitys like archery ,building huts, obstical cource and sardeins.
P.S if Twizel Area School already owns Huxley why would we not have camp.

WATER CHALLENGE
I think water is a huge part of your diet and I drink a lot of water.
most people in the world don,t have any clean water so you should
If you don’t drink water, you will die. It's that important. Depending on our environment, we can live only a few days without water - maybe a week. We can live much longer without food. For most of us, we should prioritize the consumption of water far more than we currently do.
Prevent cancer. Yes, that’s right – various research says staying hydrated can reduce risk of colon cancer by 45%5, bladder cancer by 50%6, and possibly reduce breast cancer risk as well.7
Be less cranky. Research says dehydration can affect your mood and make you grumpy and confused.3 Think clearer and be happier by drinking more water.
Perform better. Proper hydration contributes to increased athletic performance. Water composes 75% of our muscle tissue!4 Dehydration can lead to weakness, fatigue, dizziness, and electrolyte imbalance.
Lose weight. Sometimes we think we are hungry, when actually we are thirsty. Our body just starts turning on all the alarms when we ignore it. For those of you trying to drop some pounds, staying hydrated can serve as an appetite suppressant and help with weight loss.
Have less joint pain. Drinking water can reduce pain in your joints by keeping the cartilage soft and hydrated. This is actually how glucosamine helps reduce joint pain, by aiding in cartilage’s absorption of water.
Flush out waste and bacteria. Our digestive system needs water to function properly. Waste is flushed out in the form of urine and sweat. If we don't drink water, we don't flush out waste and it collects in our body causing a myriad of problems. Also combined with fiber, water can cure constipation.
Prevent headaches. Sometimes headaches can be caused by dehydration, so drinking water can prevent or alleviate that nasty head pain. Next time your head hurts, try drinking water.
Make your skin glow. Our skin is the largest organ in our body. Regular and plentiful water consumption can improve the color and texture of your skin by keeping it building new cells properly. Drinking water also helps the skin do it's job of regulating the body's temperature through sweating.2
Feed your body. Water is essential for the proper circulation of nutrients in the body. Water serves at the body’s transportation system and when we are dehydrated things just can’t get around as well.

One billion people in our world live without safe drinking water.
Today, 2.6 billion people, including almost one billion children, live without basic sanitation.
Diarrhoea kills more children every year than AIDS, malaria and measles combined.
Dirty water is killing more people than wars and other violence.
There are over one million children dying every year from dirty water and poor sanitation.
When combined, safe water, sanitation and hygiene reduce the number of deaths caused by diarrhoea by 65 percent.
The minimum estimated amount of safe water every individual needs is 20 to 50 litres every day.
The average person in the developing world uses 10 litres of water every day for their drinking, washing and cooking. This is the same amount used in the average flush of a New Zealand toilet.
New Zealanders each use between 160-400 litres per day.
The weight of water that women in Africa and Asia carry on their heads is commonly 20kg, the same as the average NZ airport luggage allowance.
40 billion working hours are spent carrying water each year in Africa.
443 million school days are lost due to water related diseases.
11 percent more girls attend school when sanitation is available.
Oxfam projects providing safe water, sanitation and hygiene education cost on average just $45 per head.

I am at a BMX N.Z final and I am in 4th and it is my last run and I need to do a run faster than 8.7 seconds I go down the ledge and hit the jump and out of nowhere a small dragon comes out and knocks me off my bike, I lost my chance and it was all because of that dumb dragon but he is injured so I call the vet and they say “ They don,t know how to fix it “ I have to take him home and look after it till it heals and I have no idea how to fix him and he will probably burn my house down. I take him home and he is going to have to come riding with me. We arrive at the track and he is sitting on my bike and the next thing I know he is going down the track! I sprint after him and he hits the first jump and lands it and i'm thinking how can an injured dragon land the jump so well but then he is looking like he is going to crash but he manages to grease the peg on the ground and doesn't crash and then finishes the track but then tips the bike”if I put some work into this dragon he could be a rider”. He goes for the second time and hits the first jump with way too much speed CRASHES! So I race over and he just gets back up and flies the bike to the top. While we are biking home I see a poster for a beginners tournament and it is tomorrow so I take him there. And he won the tournament by 6.4sec. 1 year later. I am in 3rd this year for the pros and the final race this time I need a run faster than 7.9sec but so far my fastest run is 8.5 so it is going to be a challenge.I go down fly over the first jump on the second jump I hit a rock and it puts me off I hit the third on an angle and crash but make it over the the finish line and my time was 7.7 so I got first but I broke my leg in two places and broke my wrist but I finally won and I had my pet on my side the entire time

Paper wasps

Board of Trustees
Room 15 has just been informed that there may not be any more camps at Twizel area school will not be having any more camps.
100% of Room 15 like Huxley Camp and we think it would be very stupid to get rid of Camps
1.Us kids love having freedom but we are still learning.

I think water is a huge part of your diet and I drink a lot of water.
most people in the world don,t have any clean water so you should
- If you don’t drink water, you will die. It's that important. Depending on our environment, we can live only a few days without water - maybe a week. We can live much longer without food. For most of us, we should prioritize the consumption of water far more than we currently do.
- Prevent cancer. Yes, that’s right – various research says staying hydrated can reduce risk of colon cancer by 45%5, bladder cancer by 50%6, and possibly reduce breast cancer risk as well.7
- Be less cranky. Research says dehydration can affect your mood and make you grumpy and confused.3 Think clearer and be happier by drinking more water.
- Perform better. Proper hydration contributes to increased athletic performance. Water composes 75% of our muscle tissue!4 Dehydration can lead to weakness, fatigue, dizziness, and electrolyte imbalance.
- Lose weight. Sometimes we think we are hungry, when actually we are thirsty. Our body just starts turning on all the alarms when we ignore it. For those of you trying to drop some pounds, staying hydrated can serve as an appetite suppressant and help with weight loss.
- Have less joint pain. Drinking water can reduce pain in your joints by keeping the cartilage soft and hydrated. This is actually how glucosamine helps reduce joint pain, by aiding in cartilage’s absorption of water.
- Flush out waste and bacteria. Our digestive system needs water to function properly. Waste is flushed out in the form of urine and sweat. If we don't drink water, we don't flush out waste and it collects in our body causing a myriad of problems. Also combined with fiber, water can cure constipation.
- Prevent headaches. Sometimes headaches can be caused by dehydration, so drinking water can prevent or alleviate that nasty head pain. Next time your head hurts, try drinking water.
- Make your skin glow. Our skin is the largest organ in our body. Regular and plentiful water consumption can improve the color and texture of your skin by keeping it building new cells properly. Drinking water also helps the skin do it's job of regulating the body's temperature through sweating.2
- Feed your body. Water is essential for the proper circulation of nutrients in the body. Water serves at the body’s transportation system and when we are dehydrated things just can’t get around as well.

The Prince and the Albatross Egg 1994
the vidio conferance begain with a girl from Halfway Bush School explaining the nesting habbits at the royal nesting habbits
on the otago penisula
Prince Charles arived and sat down quietly amongst the Wellington children and listened.
Then he took a microphone and begain asking qwestions.
' What is the wing span of an aduld Albatross'
'up to 3.5 meters' they all ansered together
'and how big is an albatross egg ? '
The Dunedin children held one up infront of the telivison camera.
The Prince noted that it was very big - no room for two eggs in an albatross egg
Thencame an unexspected royal qwestion
'Can you eat an albatross egg, do you think' ?
There was a long silance New Zeland would think of eating a royal albatross egg
There are only afew nesting pairs in New Zeland, but other albatross eggs? sub Antarctic islands were they are comman
Nobody new the anser - except me.
I was dying to butt in. I had lived on albatross and pengwin eggs while teaching in Falkland Islands
huge eggs that filled a dinner plate, and turned transparent when cooked. eggs with a distenked fishy flavor.
